Abstract

"In a review article in 2015 (1) and a book in 2020 (2) my colleagues and I proposed that therapeutic change in a variety of modalities results from updating memories through a process of reconsolidation that incorporates new emotional experiences. This theory is especially relevant to psychoanalysis, as Freud was the first person to describe memory reconsolidation (which he called “memory retranscription” [umschrift]), and because changing or updating memories has the potential to produce the kind of lasting change to which psychoanalysis has always aspired. From this perspective, recurrent maladaptive patterns can be conceptualized as schematic memories that determine how situations are routinely construed and responded to. Since these memories are reactivated in the transference and can become malleable, a series of corrective emotional experiences in interaction with the analyst can potentially transform those memories and improve adaptation. This new perspective suggests that the effectiveness of interpretations, the mainstay of psychoanalysis, may in large part be due to the indirect emotional messages that are conveyed while aiming to promote insight."
